T-SQL is the primary way in which SQL Server professionals will interact with the data for their applications. A solid understanding of how to structure queries will help ensure that results are not only correct, but also that they can be processed quickly and efficiently.
This one-day online training course will introduce you to a number of intermediate-level concepts that will improve the T-SQL code you write. You will learn about windowing functions, error handling, aggregates, pivoting data, and CTEs along with a few tips and tricks for coding faster.
By the end of this course, you will learn how to:
- Implement error handling using TRY..CATCH as well as THROW
- Write basic window queries with as LEAD/LAG and partitions
- Write CTEs and use them to simplify code
- Write PIVOT queries for move row data to columns
Session 1: Writing Cleaner Code – 11am ET
This session will examine ways to write better code by using CTEs to simplify queries, implement error handling to deal with problematic data, and show a few tips and tricks for writing code quicker and generating enough test data to properly evaluate your queries.
Session 2: Intermediate Queries – 1pm ET
We'll examine a few intermediate techniques for efficient queries. We start with tally tables and calendar tables, showing practical uses of each. We will then look at pivoting data to display row data as column data and vice versa.
Session 3: Windowing Functions in SQL Server – 3pm ET
In this session, we'll examine the windowing functions in SQL Server that allow you to efficiently query data in groups, or partitions, and answer complex questions such as running totals and ranking results into percentiles.
