  • IN SEARCH OF SQL SERVER INNOVATORS

  • (contributed by Brian Moran, news editor, brianm@sqlmag.com)

Have you deployed SQL Server technology in a creative and innovative way to solve a thorny technical or business problem? Do friends walk into your server room and sigh, "Wow, I wish I had a SQL Server setup like that"? Do you yearn to stand on top of your server, arms out stretched, and proclaim, "I'm king of the SQL Server world"? Would you like to win $1 million and your own private Caribbean island?

I can't help out with the million bucks or the island, but you might still be interested in entering the first annual SQL Server Magazine Innovator Awards. SQL Server Magazine and Microsoft are jointly sponsoring this year's SQL Server Innovator Awards. Outstanding entries will receive a cool pewter mug trophy that can be filled with the beverage of your choice. In addition, the top prizewinner will receive bragging rights, an all-expenses-paid round-trip to the SQL Server Magazine LIVE! Fall 2002 conference in sunny Orlando, Florida, and the prestigious SQL Server Innovator's Cup traveling trophy for an entire year. Who cares about the World Cup when you can take home this beauty!

So how do you win? If you work with SQL Server and have created a technical solution to a problem or enhanced a program or system feature to improve performance or Return on Investment (ROI), you qualify to enter this awards program. Entering is easy. SQL Server Magazine is accepting entries until August 15. Select members of the SQL Server Magazine editorial staff and Microsoft representatives will evaluate the entries and will contact finalists for in-depth phone interviews. You'll find more information and an entry form at http://www.sqlmag.com/awards.

What are we interested in? Here are a few of the sample, guiding questions we've posted on the entry form to give you some ideas:

  • Are you scaling out your system with SQL Server 2000's federated database support?
  • Are you scaling your SQL Server system beyond eight processors to handle large workloads or data warehouses or to consolidate multiple servers on a single system and ease administration?
  • Are you implementing OLAP or data mining to give your company's decision makers the power to analyze the wealth of data you've collected?
  • Are you using SQL Server's XML functionality to develop Web services and platform-independent applications?
  • Are you using tricks to squeeze the best performance out of your SQL Server database or to get the answers you need?
  • But heck, these are the Innovator Awards. Innovation means that you might be the only person who's thought of the solution. That's why all applicants need to summarize in 300 words or fewer (No. 2 pencil optional) the problem you solved, key points of your solution, and the measurable benefits from the solution. Go ahead, impress us.

    2. SQL SERVER NEWS AND VIEWS

  • BUFFER OVERRUN VULNERABILITY IN SQL SERVER 2000

  • (contributed by Ken Pfeil, ken@winnetmag.com)

Mark Litchfield of Next Generation Security Software (NGSSoftware) discovered a vulnerability in SQL Server 2000 when used in conjunction with the Microsoft Jet 4.0 database engine that can lead to an attacker executing arbitrary code on the vulnerable system. This vulnerability stems from a remotely exploitable buffer overrun in the OpenDataSource function. Microsoft recommends that affected users apply the patch mentioned in the Microsoft article "ACC2002: Updated Version of Microsoft Jet 4.0 Available in Download Center," which you can read at the first URL below.

  • MICROSOFT POSTS NEW WEB DEVELOPMENT TOOL

  • (contributed by Paul Thurrott, thurrott@winnetmag.com)

ASP.NET coders will want to check out a free new development tool called Web Matrix, which includes a WYSIWYG development environment, SQL Server management capabilities, and mobile-application creation features, all wrapped up in a tiny 1.2MB download of managed code goodness. While I was at Microsoft for a technical workshop, I learned that the company will use Web Matrix to test features intended for the next Visual Studio (VS) version. For more information, see the ASP.NET Web site.

  • RESULTS OF PREVIOUS INSTANT POLL: ENFORCING DATA INTEGRITY

  • Sponsored by BMC Software

The voting has closed in SQL Server Magazine's nonscientific Instant Poll for the question, "Where do you usually enforce data integrity?" Here are the results (+/1 percent) from the 407 votes:

    • 10% At the client
    • 41% At the server
    • 35% At the client and the server
    • 12% Varies according to efficiency
    • 2% I don't give much thought to data integrity

  • NEW INSTANT POLL: DEFECTIVE SOFTWARE

  • The next Instant Poll question is, "Do you think Microsoft should be held financially liable for defective software?" Go to the SQL Server Magazine Web site and submit your vote for 1) Yes, 2) No, or 3) Not sure.

    5. RESOURCES

  • WHAT'S NEW IN SQL SERVER MAGAZINE: GUARD YOUR DATA WITH KERBEROS

  • Running SQL Server 2000 on Windows 2000 offers great flexibility in how you manage logins, how you secure both the authentication process and the channel between the client and server, and how you limit access to services enterprisewide. Kerberos authentication, the default authentication protocol in Win2K, improves on Windows NT's authentication protocol in several ways and offers identification of both the client and the server. Examine how you can use Kerberos to protect the data on your SQL Server 2000 servers by reading Morris Lewis's article "Guard Your Data with Kerberos," which appears in the July 2002 issue of SQL Server Magazine and is available online at the following URL:
    http://www.sqlmag.com/articles/index.cfm?articleid=25080

  • HOT THREAD: UNABLE TO CONNECT TO SQL SERVER 2000 THROUGH ACCESS

  • KellyB is working with customers who are unable to connect to SQL Server 2000 through Microsoft Access. The customers receive an error message that might point to an ODBC driver problem; KellyB suspects the error might also be related to the version of Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) in use. Offer your advice and read other users' suggestions on the SQL Server Magazine forums at the following URL:
    http://www.sqlmag.com/forums/messageview.cfm?catid=3&threadid=6937

  • TIP: RETRIEVING A DATABASE'S STORED PROCEDURES AND CHANGE DATES

  • (contributed by the Microsoft SQL Server development team)

    Q. In SQL Server 2000, how can I list a database's stored procedures and their change dates?

    A. The data you're looking for is stored in SQL Server 2000's system tables. Because Microsoft discourages users from querying the system tables directly (the tables change from release to release), we recommend that you retrieve this information from the ANSI-standard information schema views for each database. The following statement uses an information schema view to return the data you want:

USE <mydatabase> -The database that holds the stored procedures -and functions. GO SELECT specific_catalog, specific_schema, routine_type, routine_name, created, FROM INFORMATION_SCHEMA.ROUTINES ORDER BY 1 asc, 2 asc, 3 asc, 4 asc

Note that SQL Server retains only the created date for stored procedures, so to capture the date of the latest version, you need to drop, then create the procedure instead of using ALTER to modify or update the procedure.

Send your technical questions to questions@sqlmag.com.
